A long day on the open road.
Free State | 06 September
Today I woke up from my guest house just outside Aliwal North, had some coffee and watched the sun rise over the Orange River. Bliss!
I headed out into town to meet up with Tenus, as I heard that his electrical company uses Jonsson Workwear. I had a coffee with the team, showed them the Jonsson Journey scrapbook and a bit of what I was doing with my trip.
We then headed off to a feeding mill where the workers were also wearing Jonsson Workwear so I went back after this shoot to take some photos of them there.
The shoot went well, it was nice and quick, and then I decided to take a drive around the area and see what else I could find.
I ended up driving 557km today passing the largest diamond mine in the Free State, which is not the Kimberley mine but a mine in Jagersfontuin! I saw a massive fire along the way on a farmer’s land and then headed towards the Gariep Dam. The Gariep Dam is a huge project that Eskom initiated to create hydropower. I drove around the whole dam looking for the dam wall & almost running over a tortoise trying to cross the road! So I stopped to help him on his way, good deed for the day!
I decided to push through to Smithsfield where I had planned to do another shoot of an incredible and inspirational church group who I was told also wears Jonsson Workwear.
I arrived in the town at 17h00, headed over to the pub for a pizza and a beer to finish off a long week. I got my sport fix by watching some local rugby on the telly and ended up staying in old Dutch-style accommodation.
All in all a great day on the road.
