The Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail
The drive from Bulembu, Swaziland to Barberton in Mapumalanga, is voted one of the top ten drives in Africa. I was lucky enough to experience this on a clear, beautiful day. The geotrail twists and turns through the Barberton Greenstone Belt, a vast mountain range famously known as the best-preserved example of a 350 million year sequence of Archaean Earth rocks, holding some of the oldest, ancient rock sediments in the world.
The trail was developed to preserve the unique geological heritage and to encourage tourism and local economic development. It is highly informative with landscaped laybys at sites of geological interest with information-rich panels.
The Barberton Greenstone Belt has been termed “the Genesis of Life” as it is believed that the volcanic eruptions which occurred here billions of years ago, resulted in the formation of earth as it is today. The drive boasts some absolutely incredible views and is definitely worth doing if you are in the area!
