The Kalahari Red Dune Route
The Route from Upington to Kuruman in the Northern Cape is known as the Kalahari Red Dune Route, due to the vast, red desert that lines either side of the long, straight roads. I woke up at 5AM to watch a beautiful African sunrise and began the long drive along the R360 to Askham, my first stop. The route drives through an amazing landscape of salt and desert pans with dry vegetation scattered across the red sands.
In Askham, I met a farm owner who happened to be a user of Jonsson Workwear, and luckily allowed me to camp under the stars on his property.
From Askham, I carried on along the R31 to Van Zylsrus. While driving towards an incredible sunrise over the African planes, I saw herds of Springbok, Wildebeest, Kudu and hundreds of circling vultures.
It is said that no two visits to the Kalahari are the same. This ancient and beautiful land is amazingly rich in diversity, and constantly changing with the winds and seasons. I adventured through these parts during the rainy season as you can see by the vast amounts of greenery in the photos.
